With every other mobile having an app like Instagram, every other mobile owner is now a photographer. While professional photographers might frown at how everyone now thinks they are world-class photographers, it is great that some of us are enthused enough to buy ourselves DSLR cameras. A smaller portion of these DSLR owners go on to take photography more seriously and lo and behold we’ve a load of people who have an engaging hobby – a welcome and necessary break from the humdrum of life.
Photography is one of those hobbies that has hit home in huge numbers. It is also one of those things that people have developed a new taste in. What I find more intriguing is that I see people all around me rekindling their interest in something they were passionate about as kids or teenagers.
Those long forgotten piano classes have now become approachable again with a music app on the phone. A friend uses a mobile app to play an accompanying tanpura tune when she practices her singing.
Another has found her way back to sketching with just a tablet and her finger at her disposal. She makes adorable sketches of people dear to her in her free time.
A stress-reliever that had taken a backseat as life took over and became unapproachable because of the equipment needed to get it going, is now doable. The difference lies between spending time looking for the correct pencil and paper and having a tab handy when you are waiting for a doctor’s appointment.
YouTube has become an ocean of resources for the creatively inclined. From how to solve the Rubik’s cube to sewing to getting your makeup just right to the latest in quilling – you name it and you have it! For a person whose day job is to be on a computer all the time, it is so easy to look up a solution for that tiny problem you are stuck at with your hobby. Something you can apply the next chance you have with your hobby.
Reading, of course, has never been more convenient. Or for that matter, writing. I find myself jotting down a story/poetry idea on my phone’s notepad when I’m commuting. In fact, your creativity is your limit. Look at how this writer has used technology as a medium to write an epistolary (a story told in the form of written communication between its characters).
Time and convenience must’ve been the two main constraints keeping you from your hobby. Thanks to technology, convenience is hardly a restriction for most hobbies. The question then is, when will you make time for yourself?
