[Graphic] How Smartphones Became Value For Money in 4 Years!

Motorola Then and Now

In the past few decades Technology has come a long way and has been one of the fastest growing sectors on the planet. Technology wasn’t affordable back then, with the first ever computer being sold at over USD 3000 (INR 1,82,000 today) and the first ever laptop costing around USD 1800 (INR 1,09,200 today). Thanks to the rapid growth and innovation in manufacturing techniques coupled with economies of scale, it has helped bring these prices down drastically. A laptop today costs as low as INR 16,500 and a mobile phone for INR 2,600.

Mobiles have now become the primary screen for doing things like playing games and shooting mails, bringing the entire world to your palm. The first cellphone was far from reach for most of us — the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X which costed a whopping $4000 (INR 2,42,640). While you pick your jaw up looking at the price, the 8000X weighed 2.5 pounds (1.1 Kg) and had a single-line, text-only LED screen. Although smartphones have seen the fastest evolution, the biggest change the mobile industry witnessed was the introduction of the iPhone in 2007. It became a rage and while everyone couldn’t afford one they knew they wanted one.

The first flagship Android phones offered the best in terms of processing power and went neck-to-neck with the iPhone. But Android did something better. Today, Android has made the smartphone accessible not only the rich and wealthy, but to everyone with close to 900 Million activations. While the first few Android versions were catching up with the iPhone, today Google’s open source alternative is certainly the dominating mobile platform. And good reason for this is the affordability of smartphones. We take a look at how the computing power of a mobile phone has become affordable over the years, by comparing Android devices from the last five years and mapping their computing strength to the price.

So we took the best phones from 2009 and 2010, and mapped the closest thing you can get today. We also made sure we’re comparing the launch price of both these phones, to be fair.
